What is an electric winch?

Depending on the model of winch, you have either a direct control cable to engage the traction or the lifting, or a radio control (wireless remote control) for remote control.
Electric winches are also distinguished by their pulling or lifting capacity. But the point that really differentiates one winch from another is its type. Indeed, there are several types of winches: manual, electric, mechanical and hydraulic. A type of winch corresponds to a use because of its load capacity, its operation and its cable (type and diameter of the cable).
How does an electric winch work?
As the name suggests, an electric winch needs a power supply and therefore has an electric motor. The latter rotates a rewinding guide on which is wound a metal cable or a synthetic cable, passing first through a cable guide and if necessary by a hauling pulley. In the case of a hoist, the cable is guided by a guide roller and wound around a winding roller or drum.
The motor of an electric winch is powered by 12V or 24V in the case of an all-terrain vehicle winch. As for the electric hoist, it operates under 230V. But in the first case as in the other, the electric motor is always supplied with direct current. To rotate it back and forth, simply reverse the polarity.

How to choose an electric winch?

The type and length of the cable

So much for the type of winch cable, but you also have to take into account its length. A shorter cable is much more practical than one that is too long. Remember the principle that states that the shorter the cable length, the smaller the load capacity. In other words, if you use a cable that is short, you put less load on the electric motor. In addition, you are less likely to have a drum with a bunch of badly wound cables.
The pulling speed of an electric winch depends on the weight of the object to be pulled or lifted. Indeed, the device will be faster on a load of 2t than on another of 4t.
However, you can have this information in the specifics of the winch. It is determined according to the nominal load and expressed in meters per minute.
It also depends on the power of the motor and the voltage supplied to it. An electric hoist benefits from a stable direct current from a 230V power line. As for the electric winch of a 4 × 4, it is powered by the battery. If the engine is off, the alternator will not turn, leaving the engine to rely solely on the battery. However, its tension decreases as it is called upon. To be clearer, without the alternator, a battery can have less than 12V or 24V, which is the minimum voltage to run the electric motor of the winch.
The use case
In general, you will choose a particular model depending on the situation in which you plan to use it. Whether you plan to install it in a factory or on your all-terrain vehicle, your electric winch may or may not be the one you actually need.
For use on light loads, it is often more practical and cheaper to opt for a manual winch that is for occasional and non-professional use. For heavy loads, it is best to choose an electric winch having previously determined the maximum load.

The hydraulic winch
The drum of a hydraulic winch rotates thanks to a system pressurized by hydraulic fluid. This very simple operating principle makes hydraulic winches efficient lifting and pulling devices, with better performance than electric winches.
