Inertia radiator buying guide
The latest innovation in terms of electric heating, the inertial radiator is a heating solution aimed at those who wish to gain thermal comfort while saving energy.
Based on the principle of inertia, all inertia heaters have the advantage of being much less energy-intensive than their more traditional predecessors with their ability to provide hot air even when they are turned off.You can also say goodbye to that "cold feet" feeling since the heat is properly distributed evenly throughout the room. But beyond these common points, performance varies depending on the technology and materials used.It should be noted that there are two main families of inertial radiators:dry inertia models and fluid inertia models. So which radiator to choose? To be sure to make the right choice, it is above all necessary to know the difference between these two types.
Dry and fluid inertia: what are the differences?
In theory, there is no better inertial radiator if you only consider the quality of the heating. The choice between a dry inertia or fluid inertia radiator will largely depend on your needs. So, in order to choose your inertia heater, discover the characteristics of each type.
Dry inertia radiators
Having the ability to release their heat for a long time, a dry inertia heater is able to keep a room warm even when it is turned off, which is perfect if you want to reduce your energy bill.
Most dry inertia radiators have a solid heating core which in most cases is made of metal, cast aluminum or steel plates. Other more efficient models incorporate a heating core made from refractory materials such as brick, lava stone, granite, soapstone or even ceramic. Thanks to their incredible inertia, these materials have the ability to accumulate much more heat which will be evenly distributed throughout a room even after the heater is turned off.
While dry inertia radiators are known to heat up quite slowly, this is not the case with a high-end model equipped with a heated faceplate. Also called gentle heat radiator, it is particularly responsive.
Fluid inertia radiators
Unlike dry inertia radiators, the fluid inertia radiator has the advantage of offering a rapid rise in temperature. This is due to the fact that it has a metal heating body which is often made of aluminum. It is therefore arguably the best inertia radiator to install in a bedroom. Its greatest asset, however, is its ability to provide constant heat.
A fluid inertia radiator has a heat transfer fluid as a heat transmission vector in which the immersion heaters (electrical resistances) are immersed. This liquid, which can be glycol water, vegetable or mineral oil, thus turns in a closed circuit in order to emit its heat via the radiant facade. Its mode of operation and the effects felt with a coolant radiator are therefore not that different from those of a water central heating.
How to choose your inertia radiator?
Choosing the best inertial electric heater will be determined by your heating habits as well as the configuration of each room. You will have to take into account the power of the device, but also the place where your heating system will be placed before buying an inertia radiator.
Select the right power
Its electrical resistance allows a dry or fluid inertia radiator to redistribute the stored heat even when it is turned off. However, in order for the appliance to distribute the heat sufficiently evenly, it is important to choose the power levels carefully. So, the more space there is to heat, the more a powerful radiator will be needed. You will also need to consider the insulation in your home. Poor insulation will also require more power.
To put it simply, if the housing is airtight, know that to heat a 15m² room to 20 ° C, you will need a radiator with a power of around 1000 watts. In the opposite situation, it will be necessary to double the power. For more spacious rooms, you can opt for high power or get several low consumption radiators.
Consider its location
Offering better guarantees of durability over time, the dry inertia radiator is recommended in living rooms. The slowness of temperature variations allows optimal comfort. Although it is more expensive to buy, the dry inertia radiator nevertheless remains an economical solution in the long term, especially in terms of power consumption.
The fluid inertia radiator, on the other hand, heats up more quickly. It is also attractive in terms of price and it is also economical electric heating. However, it has a reputation for being less resistant. That is why it is often recommended to use it as an electric back-up heater in bedrooms and less used rooms of your home. So be careful about the quality of manufacture when you choose this type of heater.
